COMPUTER EXPLORERS-207

Kay Shakespeare
Owner

Kay earned a Bachelor of Education from Wolverhampton University in England. She taught children aged between 4 and 12 years old for more than thirteen years before moving to Houston with her family in 1998.For two years she home schooled her sons, now aged eleven and sixteen, before becoming involved as a board member with Legacy Preparatory Christian Academy, a new university model school. Kay loves owning a COMPUTER EXPLORERS franchise. Having always been a teacher, she is very comfortable in the school and educator conference environment. She enjoys talking with directors and teachers in any context, and if she has an opportunity to interact with students, all the better. She has the pleasure of having extremely dedicated and talented teachers working for her and enjoys spending time with them away from work, and using her experience to facilitate them in providing the best technology education possible for their students. She is not a “techie” and so can relate to classroom teachers who have inadequate skills to teach technology to their students. She loves to see what the children are achieving and the pleasure it gives them. When she goes into a school and sees the students who were learning about the basics of engineering in 3rd grade, and now they are in 5th grade and completing the Engineering 1 course and building motorized machines to meet challenges, it gives her an enormous sense of satisfaction. “This is the evidence that what we do is of great value.”

Teacher

Dawn Romaguera:  Dawn has been married to husband, Mike for 25 years and they have 5 children.  Their oldest will graduate from LSU in May and their youngest is in the 4th grade.  She has a B.S. in Accounting from LSU and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from UNO.  Her experience ranges from teaching at a Vocational-Technical School for the State of Louisiana to the position of Associate Professor at Nunez Community College.  She also received the NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award as well as being named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for two years.  Dawn has been teaching with CE for 2 years.  Having taught several different college computer textbooks, she considers that the curriculum written for the CE program is concise and relevant.  The course offerings are varied, which keeps the classes fun for her as well as the students year after year.  Whether a child is a novice or an experienced computer user, each class starts at a beginning level, but quickly moves to more challenging topics.  She has really enjoyed watching the little ones who are not sure how to work the mouse evolve to the child she can’t get to leave when the class is over.  She equally enjoys teaching the older students and can use her previous experience to enhance the curriculum and give them relevant tools they can use for their other studies and real-life situations.

Shree Dhavale: Ms. Shree has a B.S. in Information Technology from Macon State College in Macon, Georgia and has been in the Information Technology field for over eight years. She has been married to her husband for 14 years and has a son in 7th grade. She has previously taught Music and Tae Kwon Do to young children and especially enjoys working with the preschool age group because they are curious about every thing around them. It is fun to introduce new ideas to this age group with the help of something that they can create or see on a computer screen. It is most gratifying to watch their eyes light up when they see their creations come to life on the computer screen. One of the most exciting things for her about teaching the CE program is that the children learn a lot of “soft skills” such as logic, deriving inference, cause and effect, reading and math skills without realizing it because they are busy having so much fun!

Amesha Daniels: Amesha has been with Computer Explorers since the Spring of 2008 and is now teaching at The Woodlands Young Learners Academy in The Woodlands area. She has experience with preschoolers by some 10+ years of teaching Sunday School, being a Preschool/Children’s Ministry Director at her former church for the last three years, as well as time teaching at a local day school in the Tomball area. She is married to her best friend of 14 years, Russell and has two sons, 13 and 10. Her hobbies include scrapbooking, watching movies, playing games with her family and vacationing with her family whenever she gets the chance. The three things she enjoys most about Computer Explorers is first that, it nourishes the curious minds of children, as well as introducing them to the world of computers in a very friendly and happy atmosphere. It is such a joy to see a child’s face light up as they master new skills on the computer. They don’t even realize they are learning as they explore the fun software they are exposed to during class. Secondly, she enjoys being around the kids. They say the funniest things and always bring a smile to her face. And last, she enjoys the flexibility offered to her as a teacher for Computer Explorers. Teaching young children and also getting to be available for her family brings her great pleasure and fulfillment.

Why our classes are successful…
The success of our program is due to several aspects

Why we’re successful:
- Delivery by a trained teacher who also loves working with children, is enthusiastic and experienced with technology, and supports the mission of the school or group.
- Curriculum that is professionally written by educators.
- Software that is carefully selected to be educationally and age appropriate.
- Integration of technology into core curriculum areas and real-life situations.
- A comprehensive, step-by-step process of co-operative learning to develop skills.  Research has shown that students who have opportunities to work in pairs and small groups learn faster and more efficiently, have greater retention, and feel more positive about the learning experience.  It is a way for students to learn essential interpersonal life-skills, oral communication skills, and to develop the ability to work collaboratively—a skill now greatly in demand in the workplace.  Itis a way for students to take turns with different roles such as facilitator, reporter, recorder, etc.  In a cooperative group, every student has a specific task, everyone is involved in the learning or project.
- The study of each technology area is completed by the creation of a project to reinforce skills learned in th elab as well as in other core areas.
- COMPUTER EXPLORERS began over 20 years ago and is constantly developing programs to stay at the forefront of technology education.
